Acehtrend.co, Banda Aceh – Police in Aceh shot and killed two people believed to have been involved in the kidnapping of a public official on Monday (1/2), shortly after the official’s family paid Rp 700 million ($51,000) in ransom for his release.
Kamal Bahri, the province’s procurement service unit head, was abducted last Thursday by a group of four men. The alleged kidnappers subsequently contacted Kamal’s family, demanding a ransom of Rp 1 billion.
After the family managed to convince the men to lower their demands to Rp 700 million, both sides agreed to meet on Monday in Bireuen, near the border of North Aceh district, on condition that Kamal would be freed once the money changed hands.
However, unbeknownst to the alleged kidnappers, the family had already approached the provincial police, who set up an ambush at the agreed location.
Aceh Police general crimes unit chief Sr. Comr. Nurfallah said on Tuesday that officers were hiding in the bushes in anticipation of Kamal’s release. After Kamal was taken to safety, the officers came out of hiding and fired warning shots but the perpetrators attempted to flee by car.
A dramatic chase ensued over the next 15 minutes, with officers continuously trying to shoot the tires of the suspects’ car in an attempt to stop them. The perpetrators eventually pulled over in front of an auto repair shop in a nearby village, from where they fled on foot. Police officers continued their pursuit, also on foot, while shooting at the fleeing men.
Two of the suspects died after sustaining bullet wounds to the shoulders, chests, necks, and hips. They were later identified as Barmawi and Ismuharuddin. Police were also able to recover the ransom money.
The two remaining suspects are still at large. /Tempo.co
